edu-ID September Newsletter

Dear edu-ID Users and Service Operators,

We are happy to inform you about the following news regarding the Switch edu-ID service:

1. Introduction of security notifications

The Switch edu-ID service will begin sending notifications to account owners when they log in from a previously unknown device. To achieve this, Switch edu-ID analyses the device model, operating system, browser and IP address. If any unusual changes are detected, the user is notified by email. Here is an example of such a notification.

A similar information will also be displayed in the edu-ID account management. The purpose of these notifications is to protect the account and prevent identity theft. Users now have significantly improved options for determining whether unauthorised persons have access to their account.

The notification will be activated gradually from 15 October 2025 and will be available to all users by the end of 2025.

2. Sync between StatusIQ and operations mailing list improved

As part of our efforts to improve communication channels, we have integrated incident communication into the operations mailing list. Concretely, we have subscribed eduid-operations@lists.switch.ch to our service status page status.eduid.ch. If you are currently subscribed to these status updates already separately from this mailing list, you would now get two alerts. Please remove your personal email address from our status page if you do not wish to get a duplicate notification.

3. Blog article: IdP Load Testing

Frédéric Gerber, Daniel Lutz and Zoltan Umlauf of the edu-ID DevOps engineering team describe the measures we have taken to prevent failures of the edu-ID service due to overloading of the central IdP component.
